About Nyungwe
Nyungwe forest is situated in the Albertine Rift, a series of mountain ranges from the Rwenzori Mountains in western Uganda and Congo. Nyungwe is one of the largest mountainous rain forests remaining in Africa. Of recent Nyungwe forest was recognized as a National Park making it the East Africa’s largest protected as a high-altitude rainforest. The conservation area covers approximately 378 square miles
Bird Species
Nyungwe National Park holds a variety of bird species and been identified as one of the most important ontological sites in Rwanda, holding almost 300 bird species of which half a dozen are restricted to Albertine rift. Including, Red-faced woodland Warbler, yellow-eyed black, Rwenzori Turaco and many others. More exciting unique species that require a night drive like the Albertine owlet, fraser’s Eagle owl plus Rwenzori Nightjar.
Chimpanzees/Primates
Nyungwe Forest is well known for its large numbers of different primates with over 13 species have been identified, these include: chimpanzees and the handsome L’Hoest’s monkey with his flowing skirt. Troops of a hundred strong Angola Colobus are an acrobatic delight. Nyungwe is also home to the habituated species such as the Mangaby and the Blue monkey.
Large mammals are residents in the forest including the leopard, golden cat, bush pigs and the black fronted dicker.

Chimp tracking Nyungwe
Due to the large population of chimpanzees in Nyungwe with about 500 individuals, troop of chimpanzees often moves into Uwinka and the colored trail as well, and it is up to the tourist to decide whether to pay extra to go for chimp trekking
Golden monkeys in Nyungwe forest
Nyungwe represents the highest number of primates in Rwanda including the L’Hoest’s monkey, Silver monkey, golden monkey, Owl faced monkey, red tailed monkey, Dent’s Mona monkey, crowned monkey, Vervet monkey, and Olive baboon which is a savanna monkey that is occasionally seen along the road through Nyungwe, Grey-cheeked mangabey is an arboreal monkey of the forest interior. In addition to the chimpanzees and monkeys, Nyungwe harbors four types of small nocturnal primates more closely related to the lemurs of Madagascar than to any other primates on the African main land. These are three species which include bush baby or galago. Tourists are advice to go for golden monkey trek to share a life time adventure experience
