Lake Bisina is a freshwater lake located in eastern Uganda 15kms from Kumi District along Kumi-Soroti-high road. Lake Bisina has endowed with wide range of flora and fauna and a permanent source of fresh water to the resident population, this made it a Ramsar World Heritage Site on 15th September 2006, and the wetland system of lakes Bisina and Opeta is lies between two predominantly dry lands.
Lake Bisina is a narrow and shallow which fringed by swamp with a big supporting number of localized bird species including the legendary shoebill and rare papyrus Gonolek, white-winged warbler, pygmy goose, lesser Jacana and fox’s weaver, White-backed Duck, and it also harbors wild such as Nile Crocodiles and Hippos although which are rarely seen. Lake Bisina provides fish species like mud fish, lungfish, cat fish and a species of tilapia.
Lake Bisina is also known as Lake Salisbury connected upstream via a wetland to Lake Opeta and drains into Lake Kyoga, and is one of Uganda’s 33 Important Bird Areas and since 2006 a Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance.
