Kampala city is the capital city and the largest urban centre of Uganda with up to 1.2 million people making it an economic and social hub. The name Kampala derived from an expression used by the Baganda known as “Kasozi Kampala” meaning “The Hill of the Impala“ referring to the Impala (slender antelope, similar to the gazelle) which was always seen on the Mengo hill (one of Kampala city’s seven hills) which has acted as the palace headquarters for the Buganda Kingdom since the early 1840s.
Some of the most important attractions in the city of Kampala include Kasubi Tombs, Wamala tombs, Kabaka’s Lake, Namasole tombs, Katereke ditch, Nagaalabi coronation site, Kibuli mosque, Gadaffi mosque, Lubaga Catholic and Namirembe protestant Cathedrals, Uganda Museum and Lugard’s Fort, Namugongo martyrs shrine, the Buganda’s parliament (Buganda palace), Baha’i temple, the National theatre and local big market centers. Kampala city is well known for its famous vibrant and colorful nightlife which is further spiced up by the presence of casinos, Night clubs and many sports bars for social outings. Like the Centenary park centre, Ndere Troupe centre with traditional performances, Kiwatule recreational centre and much more centre’s.
Day 1: Kampala tour
Early in the morning after breakfast, your guide will pick you from your hotel or place of residence and drive round Kampala city highlights. Begin with Namugongo martyrs shrine which commemorates twenty Ugandan Christians heroes that were burnt alive in 1886 during King Mwanga Basamula regime the late King of Buganda, continue with a visit to Bahai temple, Uganda museum and Makerere university art gallery. Lunch at Makerere university guest house and thereafter visit the Kasubi Tombs shortly since it was gutted to fire, Bulange and Kabaka’s Lake, Kibuli mosque, Rubaga Catholic Cathedral ending with shopping spree in various craft markets for local made souvenirs.
