Ziwa Rhino sanctuary is approximately 180 kilometers north of Kampala, in Nakasongola district.
Ziwa Rhino sanctuary was established in 2005 to re-introduce Rhinos that had gotten extinct by 1983 due to various reasons but mainly civil wars and poaching.
Ziwa Rhino sanctuary today is a home to the White Rhinos, Antelopes, Hippos, Crocodiles, monkeys and lots of birds. Ziwa Rhino sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where you can find White Rhinos in the wild.

Ziwa Rhino sanctuary contains over 300 species of birds, there are 4 birding trail within the sanctuary which cover woodland, swamp and savannah.
The Highlight of birding at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary is elusive shoebill stork, (endangered), feeds on fish, the bird spends the majority of its time in solitude, only joining other members of its species to reproduce.
Notable birds at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary include; Beautiful Sunbird, Namaqua Dove, Pin-tailed Whydah, Bateleur, White-crested Turaco, Bruce’s Pigeon among other.
You should plan to spend at least one or two nights at the sanctuary and enjoy the assortment of birds
Where to stay
While visiting Ziwa Rhino sanctuary, you can choose to stay at the sanctuary guest house (has both self-contained and non-self-contained rooms), or do camping (have very pristine camping ground close to the sanctuary offices) or stay at the Amuka lodge (mid-range accommodation)
