Day 1: Arrival
Meet on arrival at the airport. Transfer to Kigali. Depends on arrival time you can have Kigali City Tour and see how itʼs developing after Genocide that killed almost 1 million people.
Day 2: Transfer to Bukavu
Drive through south western part of Rwanda, with spectacular views along the way. The countryside is a patchwork of green. From the bluish green of the eucalyptus trees planted on the hilltops to the dark green of the cypresses lining the narrow tracks, to the soft green of the rice fields in the valleys. After years of terrible problems, once again begun to appreciate the benefits of peace. Covering 970 km², the Highlands provide a unique habitat for thirteen species of primate, including chimpanzees, l’Hoest’s, colobus monkeys and owl-faced monkey, colobus monkeys, a large group of which can often be seen feeding along the road side or jumping from branch to branch.
Continue driving through extensive tea plantations to Cyangugu, a small harbour on Lake Kivu and cross Rusizi River to Bukavu in the DR-Congo. Overnight in Bukavu.
Day 3: Kahuzi – Biega National Park – Eastern Lowland Gorillas (g. g. graueri)
The Kahuzi-Biega National Park is a World Heritage site. A vast area of primary tropical forest dominated by two spectacular extinct volcanoes, Kahuzi and Biega , the park has a diverse and abundant fauna. Some of the last groups of eastern lowland gorillas consisting of only some 7,000 individuals, live here at between 2100 and 2a00 m above the sea-level. They have black coats, and the males develop silver backs as they mature. With the help of a ranger and trackers, we approach this rare primate. The walk can take several hours, but coming across the group in its particular habitat is an inspiring moment. Overnight in Bukavu
Day 4: Lake Kivu – Goma
The 2 busy ports of Bukavu and Goma are connected by a wild rollercoaster road that tumbles through lush plantain fields and relic patches of misty rainforest to offer sweeping views over hundreds of small islands. On the way to the north, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the calm and pristine waters and the ragged shore of Lake Kivu, Albertine Rift Valley’s highest lake and an extraordinarily beautiful island sea enclosed by steep green terraced hills. A more leisurely option is to take a speed boat plying daily between Bukavu and Goma. Overnight in Goma..
Day 5: Depart to Kibati
This morning depart to Kibati 30 minutes from Goma and up towards Rutshuru, through the lava fields. You will climb, during 3-5 hours, the Nyiragongo volcano (3,a70m high). You will reach the smoldering summit and gaze into Mordor itself! When you reach the top of the volcano, you will be welcomed by your trekking team and set up tented camp. Dinner and accommodation are to be brought as well as sleeping gear (or you can rent on request) All night, you will observe breathtaking and unforgettable views of the live volcano! It glows red at night and is the single largest volcanic live lava lake on earth!
Day 6: Nyiragongo – Kigali.
The Most Amazing Show on Earth – And Back Down (Congratulations!) After admiring the once in- a-lifetime sunrise (which takes place around 6 oʼclock) and the masses of swirling clouds glazing the valleys below you, gaze out between the sister volcanoes of Karisimbi and Visoke, and after taking a hearty breakfast in the frigid air, you will walk down the volcano amidst beautiful and highly diversified volcanic flora, and some positively alien and bizarre plants. Picnic and make your way back to Kibati to rest your legs before driving to Kigali for your flight, depends on flight time you can have a day/night room.
